Sexual Assault Prevention Suite – by EVERFI

EVERFI’s Sexual Assault Prevention (SAP) Suite is an online education solution that engages students as they progress through college, fosters healthy relationships, and prepares them to recognize and respond to sexual assault and harassment when it occurs.

The SAP suite includes courses tailored to the following student audiences: first-year students, continuing students, adult learners, graduate students, and community college students. Additional courses for student-athletes and athletic staff are available to meet NCAA sexual assault training requirements.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • identify characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships, with an emphasis on personal values and caring communities
  • distinguish between consent and non-consent, and increase behaviors that lead to mutually agreed-upon (consensual) intimacy
  • recognize the pervasiveness of sexual/relationship violence in our culture, understand misperceptions about this violence, and experience decreased tolerance of sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking (including language, attitudes, and behaviors that support violence)
  • feel increased compassion for victims of sexual assault, violence, or stalking and confidence in their ability to offer support to someone who has experienced one of these crimes
  • recognize the behaviors of a responsible bystander, and identify ways in which they can intervene and support others.
Methods

Course material is presented in an interactive online platform. The user experience is tailored based on student responses and uses positive messaging to teach critical concepts related to consent and respect.  Bystander intervention education uses scenarios to deliver developmentally appropriate intervention strategies.

All courses include the following customization options: institution-specific welcome letters and videos, policy acknowledgment, information about campus and local resources, customizable survey questions.

Dosage

Initial courses are 45-60 minutes long. Modules for continuing education last 30 minutes.

Logistics

EVERFI hosts all courses on an administration platform that facilitates course implementation, launch, completion tracking, and data analysis.

Population Served

The SAP suite includes courses tailored to the following student audiences: first-year students, continuing students, adult learners, graduate students, and community college students. Additional courses for student-athletes and athletic staff are available to meet NCAA training requirements for harassment and sexual violence.

Theoretical Basis For Approach

The Sexual Assault Prevention Suite courses are informed by evidence-based education strategies that have been proven to be effective through independent studies. Specifically, the Sexual Assault Prevention Suite emphasizes positive norms and beliefs, appealing to the majority of individuals who already engage in healthy relationships. This approach helps to overcome barriers to bystander intervention and dispel the misperception that unhealthy behaviors and attitudes are socially acceptable.

Program Effectiveness

EVERFI conducted an evaluation study on the Sexual Assault Prevention Suite that was published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence. The study demonstrated statistically significant increases for in scales that indicate improvement in: learners’ self-reported ability to intervene as a bystander, social norms correction, and empathy and support for survivors. There was no comparison group used in the study.

PARTICIPATING COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

EVERFI works with over 1,500 colleges and universities nationwide, reaching more than 5 million students and employees each year.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR ADMINIsTRATORS

When using an online prevention education program, schools should consider follow-up activities using a variety of formats (small group discussions, lectures, awareness campaigns, theatrical presentations, etc.) to reinforce the messaging.
