Create a safety plan.
The goal of a safety plan is to help you identify ways to help yourself feel safe or feel like you can exit a situation that feels unsafe. If you were assaulted by another student, staff member, or person you may regularly see, this may entail figuring out what to do if you find yourself in close proximity to the perpetrator. Part of this plan may be having a “safe person,” i.e. a trusted friend, who knows about the assault, has your best interests at heart, and can accompany you to social events or other situations where you might encounter the perpetrator. An on-campus or local rape crisis center can help you create a safety plan, or you can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE).
